What is time-aware light?

Published July 25, 2026 · Harlowelife research and product team · Updated October 29, 2026

The short answer

Time-aware light considers where you are in the day, what you are doing, the light already at the actual task position and your stable preferences. It is more than a sunrise animation, four fixed scenes or a color-temperature timetable.

Time establishes the direction of change; the selected task informs work-surface needs; the sensor measures light at its position. Capabilities vary by product. SOLA Desk's arm and head are positioned by hand, and control stays with the user.

What does the system consider and change?

LayerExamplesRole
InputsTime, ambient light, presence, user-selected activity and preferencesProvide context
AssessmentThe course of the day, task needs, calibration baseline and repeated choicesForm an appropriate suggestion
OutputsBrightness, light color and transitionsAdjust output; positioning stays manual

How does it compare with familiar lighting?

ApproachWhat it usually changesWhat it may miss
A fixed lightManual brightness or color temperatureNo awareness of the time or activity
A smart scene lightA user-selected presetUsually no calibration of the actual work surface
A scheduled lightPresets switched at fixed timesMay miss the task and changing daylight
Time-aware task lightTime of day, activity, calibration and preferencesSpecific effects still need product measurements and human evidence

What does existing science establish?

Light affects both vision and biological responses. Integrative lighting considers these effects together. CIE S 026 defines quantities used to describe light relevant to retinal photoreceptors, including melanopic EDI.

Lighting design must also consider the task, glare, color quality and the light already in the room. Research and measurement methods help frame these decisions; they do not establish health benefits for a particular lamp.

What can Harlowelife say today?

StatusMeaning
Established scienceTiming, duration, intensity and spectrum shape light exposure.
Validated methodA detachable sensor can measure the real work surface during guided setup.
Engineering targetFinal illuminance, uniformity, glare, flicker, spectrum and transitions require production data.
Research questionVisual comfort, daytime experience, evening transitions and sleep outcomes require human evidence for the specific product.

Frequently asked questions

Is time-aware light just a timer?

A timer changes settings at fixed times. Time-aware light treats time as one input alongside the activity, ambient light at the work position and stable preferences.

Is it the same as circadian lighting?

Not exactly. Related science informs the direction of change through the day, while product design must also address visual quality, tasks, glare and control. A scientific field's name does not establish product efficacy.

Can it diagnose sleep or health problems?

No. Harlowelife products are not diagnostic or treatment devices. Presence sensing does not diagnose disease, emotion or sleep stages.

Does it need a camera or wearable?

The product logic described here does not require a camera or wearable. Final app, connectivity and offline controls will be specified before purchase.
